Module 1 - Using a "name of convenience"
Information networking as technology: tools, uses, and socio-technical interactions

Occasionally you will be asked as part of a project assignment to register or sign up for a website.  These will always be reputable and carefully screened sources, and useful resources for your professional development.  Usually they require an email address and a name.  Your own name and usual personal email address are OK to use; please do not use your TUI email address.  If for personal or professional reasons you prefer not to use them, it is appropriate to use a free email account available from a source like Hotmail or Yahoo or Gmail other source of your choosing along with a pseudonym (your instructor personally likes to use the name "Akbar del Piombo" under such circumstances).  There's nothing unethical or illegal about using such a cut-out to protect your privacy.  Just remember that you have used such an address when you want to go back to the site at later points, as you probably will.  Keeping a list of sites you're registered at and the names and emails your using is a good idea.

Remember, we won't ask you to sign up for anything inappropriate.  But privacy is also a good thing.
